Serving the Lord in Guatemala

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

When the New Year begins, it adds another year to our age. As we get older, our bodies become weaker and we begin to lay down things we were doing, rather than make new plans. But living as a Christian, our life in God is our vocation. Instead of laying things down, let’s begin the New Year with a thrill of hope for our visions and plans, because our hope springs from the faith in our faithful God who answers our prayers.

“Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart” – Psalm 37:4

San Lorenzo Elementary School

In our last prayer letter, we shared the pitiful circumstances of the graduates of San Lorenzo school. All six graduates gave up their middle school studies and had to work to help their families. We felt sorry, and have prayed for a program that could be educationally helpful to them. However, before starting any new program, we had the school’s end-of-year event, held on December 27th, inviting students and families from all grades, in order to make all of the villagers feel welcome. Well, more than 70 students and their families participated in the games, sports, learning, praise, and delicious snacks. Also starting this year, Caleb will help seminary student Danielson begin teaching educational lessons and Bible studies. Pray for a positive participation of the graduates, their parents, and for all their needs to be met.

Zion Middle School

The 2020 school year has started at Zion. Together with 54 new 1st graders, the reading of the Bible has also started anew. So, would you please pray for all the students, that they will read the Word of God with integrity? As we read the Word, we pray for understanding of the truth and growth in faith.

Multicultural Family Evangelism

More than 5,000 Koreans live in Guatemala, and there are many multicultural families of Koreans and Guatemalans. Debra has known some multicultural families through cultural events and Korean language classes and has prayed for opportunities to share the Word of God. This year she will serve as a counselor for a multicultural family gathering. Through regular meetings and fellowships, she wants to share the Gospel with the members of these multicultural families, and help them make the necessary adjustments and resolve any personal conflicts that may arise between cultural differences. Pray for more opportunities of fellowship, and for all those who interact with her, that they will overcome these cultural struggles and have their hearts open to hear the Word and be guided by the Holy Spirit. Pray for Debra to be humble under the mighty hand of God, so in due time He will show His grace and mercy to her and those that interact with her. Pray also for Debra to be in good condition physically.

Youth Evangelism

This year Debra will start her voluntary work as a Korean Language Coordinator at the San Carlos National University Language Institute, and have the opportunity to socialize with college students. At present, there are a variety of heretical religious groups and missions who are approaching the university youth in order to spiritually win them over. Pray for more opportunities for Christians in the university, including Debra, to help the youth to hear more of the Word of God, and for God’s power and guidance for those who hear the Word, that they will know the LORD and accept Him as their Savior.

Family News

Our son, Joshua, is back in Belgium after two weeks of holidays with us in Guatemala, and is now immersed in his studying. Pray for him to handle the studies and responsibilities well, in God’s guidance and protection. We thank all who prayed for Joshua’s recovery from psoriasis, which was caused by stress, and praise the Lord for answering our prayers. Please pray that it will not recur in the future.

In closing, please pray for Caleb’s safety and health, for Debra to be able to wisely handle the tasks given her, as well as maintaining good physical condition.

Our dear co-workers in prayers, we pray that 2020 will be a year eager to fulfill your dreams and hopes in the LORD. We pray that you remember to pause to listen to the voice of the Lord in the midst of fulfilling your desires.

“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps” – Proverbs 16:9

“Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday” – Psalm 37:5, 6
